Skills

Students in Heavy Equipment Operations are trained in the following subject areas:

  • Operating power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, or front-end loaders, in order to excavate, move and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement
  • Coordinating machine actions with crew members in response to hand or audio signals
  • Cleaning, maintaining and making basic repairs to equipment

Career Options

Most Heavy Equipment Operations graduates go to work for construction companies or contractors. Heavy equipment operators work in almost every climate and weather condition. Some operators work in factories, mines, or remote locations, as on such large construction projects as highways and dams. Most heavy equipment operators work full time.

Requirements

Before entering the Heavy Equipment Operations program, students must:

  • Complete the core curriculum with passing scores on all written and performance tests.
  • Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
